Police teargas Azimio MPs outside Ruto's office

Police have thwarted a bid by Azimio leaders to hand over a written petition to the office of the President along Harambee Avenue.

The Police lobbed teargas canisters at Azimio MPs led by Senate Leader of Minority Steward Masdazayo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

The group had arrived at President William Ruto's office and asked to be allowed to hand over their petition before the police dispersed them.

They had left Parliament buildings and made their way along Harambee Avenue.

On Sunday, Azimio leader Raila Odinga said he will present petitions to four state offices during their planned Tuesday protests.

The former Prime Minister said a petition will be taken to the Anniversary Towers where Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices are located. 

In the petition, they claimed August 2022 presidential poll results were doctored and called for an audit of the IEBC servers.

"We shall also petition IEBC against the sacking of the four commissioners because it presents a dangerous precedent in which in future elections, all commissioners will be required to agree with the chairperson of IEBC, effectively making the election a one-person show."

Raila said another petition will be presented to the office of the president on the high cost of living, and to also ask President Ruto to desist from destroying rival political parties.

The Opposition leader said they will also visit the National Treasury where they petition for timely disbursement of salaries for civil servants and release of all monies owed to the counties.

Raila added that they will also present a petition to the Public Service Commission to demand that public appointments be done on merit and inclusivity, unlike is the case currently.
