Deputy Chief Kadhi Omar confirms Friday as Idd-ul-Fitr

Cites sighting of the moon in parts of Mandera and Wajir Counties.

Deputy Chief Kadhi Sukyan Omar has confirmed that Friday, April 21, will be Idd-ul-Fitr.

Speaking to the media on Thursday evening at the Chief Kadhi's office in Upper Hill, Nairobi, Omar cited the sighting of the moon in parts of Mandera and Wajir Counties.

He said the Crescent of Shawwal was spotted in Imanyale and Elwak villages in Mandera County.

"Tungependa kuwatangazia waIslamu ya kwamba kesho Ijumaa ni tarehe mosi ya mwezi wa Shawwal," he said during the media briefing.

(We would like to notify Muslims that tomorrow, Friday, will be the first date of the month of Shawwal.)

Thursday marked the end 29-days of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, which was marked by dawn-to-dusk fasting.

On Wednesday, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki declared Friday public holiday via a gazette notice to mark the end of the fasting period. 

Idd commemoration happens in the first three days of Shawwal, which is the tenth month in the Muslim (lunar) calendar.

The celebrations include wearing new clothes, feasting, gifting, and donating to the needy.
