Azimio leadership has reiterated that they will henceforth not allow any plainclothes police officer to provide security during their weekly twin protests.

The Opposition outfit said on Tuesday going forward, they will be holding mass demonstrations on Mondays and Thursdays until their demands are addressed.

The outfit on Wednesday notified police IG Japhet Koome about the demos and requested security but warned that any armed police officer who will not be in uniform will be treated as a thug or hired goon.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna reaffirmed the stand on the floor of the House saying the move is aimed at keeping at bay troublemakers from infiltrating their peaceful mass protests.

"Madam speaker we have seen even in the past there have been people who have confessed to infiltrating this Opposition maandamano and committing nefarious crimes including people who bring old cars and burn them and saying oh these are people of the ODM," Sifuna said.

The ODM senator said going forward, they are going to enhance vigilance during the mass action and ensure criminal elements hellbent on igniting chaos during the protests are dealt with.

In their letter to Koome, Azimio Executive Council chairman Wycliffe Oparanya said any armed plainclothes officer who will grace the demonstrations will be subjected to civilian arrest.

"In fact Madam speaker we have said, we will not tolerate anybody calling themselves a police officer in civilian on Monday or Thursday next week," he said.

"Because that is how thugs are coming in within us then they are harming people," he added.

Ugly scenes were witnessed in various parts of the country where Azimio held protests on Monday.

Kisumu played host to most of the chaotic episodes where at some point, protesters overpowered police and chased them away.

The group then stormed United Democratic Alliance offices in Milimani estate and vandalised property, stole items and burnt two cars.

Kisumu Governor issued a statement condemning the violence and laid the blame on what he said were hired goons for infiltrating what were largely peaceful demos.

"These criminals posing as opposition supporters stunned and damaged part of a hotel, a bank, a Supermarket and a shopping Mall within the Central Business District," Nyong'o said.

"In future demonstrations, our people should apprehend and hand over to the police, anyone damaging property," Nyong'o added and called on the police to launch investigations.
