The National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi on Wednesday warned that the energy sector has become a playground for cartels.

The Ugunja MP said he will soon table a report on how some cartels are doing business with state firms and managers, milking Kenyans dry.

The MP said the Kenya Kwanza government risks being captured by the cartels which he said have for decades been blamed for high energy costs.

“The energy sector has been captured by cartels, they are transitioning from one regime to another,” Wandayi said while making a contribution to the supplementary budget appropriations bill.

“They are lethal and dangerous, we must gather the courage to deal with them once and for all if we are to deal with the high cost of energy,” he said.

The MP attributed the current crisis around China Square that saw local traders protest on Tuesday, Wandayi said the high cost of energy is pushing businesses out of the market.

“We must go to the root cause of the demonstrations, it is a fact that even if the traders are to sell their goods, there is no way they are going to make money if the cost of energy remains the same,” he said.

“Even as we condemn, we must look from within, the cartels in the energy sector must be dealt with ruthlessly.”
