Modern Coast fleet management has broken its silence on the tragic accident involving one of its buses.
The management in a statement said the ill-fated bus was travelling from Mombasa to Homabay.
The driver, the management said, was reversing down a steep slope to park when it hit a matatu.
" As a result, the driver panicked and the bus slid down and fell on its side into a ditch," said the statement.
"It was turning to leave when it hit a matatu before it veered down the tarmac into river Nyakomisaro."
There were 43 passengers aboard at the time of the accident.
"Most of them alighted safely while some who sustained minor injuries were taken for treatment, others have continued with their journey using another bus," added the company.
At least 19 passengers suffered soft injuries Wednesday after the bus they were travelling in veered off the road and fell into a river in downtown Kisii.
County Health Executive Leah Bwari said those injured suffered soft tissue injuries in the nine o'clock mishap which occurred at the Masosa Bridge, metres from Kisii Prisons.
They were, however, treated and discharged, she told journalists.
"They were five ladies and two men and none really suffered any life-threatening injury, even the one doctors initially suspected of suffering a fracture the test returned negative," said Bwari.
Kisii Central OCPD Amos Ambasa said only one person was confirmed dead.
He warned motorists against careless driving during the festivity season
