Sakaja was speaking during the Jamhuri Day fete at Nyayo Stadium.

"In the years before we won our independence, the people of Nairobi were violently divided by race and that is the darkness from which our heroes delivered us from," Sakaja said.

The Governor further noted that Nairobi is the Silicon Savannah of Africa, saying that the greatest asset is not below the ground but above ground. "It is our young people."

Earlier, President  Ruto had urged Governor  Sakaja to protect children from noise.

"Governor Sakaja, please keep the noise away from our children. You have our support," he said.

Sakaja, on November 25, banned nightclubs from operating in residential areas.

He cancelled the licenses issued and ordered his officers not to renew the permits for the aforementioned facilities.

Going further, Sakaja also commended Ruto for commissioning the Nairobi Rivers Commission.

"The Nairobi Rivers Commission is the beginning of the cleaning the river which was once the pride of the city," he said

The commission is part of Ruto's grand plan to clean up Nairobi City and restore the “filthy” capital to its former glory.

According to Ruto, the Nairobi Rivers Commission has been tasked to, “Reclaim the rivers of Nairobi as a spine to the city's blue and green infrastructure for a better urban environment and quality of life."

The commission will also be expected to examine previous reports and recommendations made to reclaim the Nairobi River and adopt lessons learnt in the new initiative.

In addition, Sakaja took the opportunity to officially invite the President to the Nairobi Festival at Uhuru park which will begin today.

On Saturday, Ruto made an impromptu visit to Uhuru Park which he will officially commission today after the Jamhuri Day fete.

The one week will be a fun-filled fair to be held every December to display and celebrate the “vibe of the city”.
