Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday left for the US to attend the US-Africa Leaders Summit.

President Joe Biden is hosting leaders from across the African continent in Washington, DC from December 13-15.

"On my way to Washington DC, USA for the US-Africa Leaders summit among other official engagements," Museveni said in a tweet.

"I look forward to working with African governments, civil society, diaspora communities across the United States, and the private sector to continue strengthening our shared vision for the future of U.S.-Africa relations," President Biden said in a statement.

ODM leader Raila Odinga left for the summit on Saturday in his capacity as AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

Raila said Biden has invited 49 African leaders to the summit.

"I'm going to discuss with presidents and business leaders on infrastructural investment opportunities in Africa," Raila said.

He spoke on Friday when addressing the 4th Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani's Agribusiness and Blue Economy Investment conference in Mombasa.

The ODM leader said his absence was the reason he cancelled the planned parallel Jamhuri Day rally on Monday at the Jacaranda grounds.

"Ile mkutano tulikuwa nayo siku ya jumatatu imeahirishwa kwa sababu mimi sitakuweko. Sio eti kwa sababu sisi tunaogopa mtu yeyote. Nataka wakenya waelewe, wengine wanasema ati ooh Raila amekabwa, amekabwa na nani?" he asked.

(Our meeting on Monday was cancelled because I won't be around not because we are afraid. I want Kenyans to understand because some are saying I have been cornered, cornered by who?)

The US-Africa Leaders Summit seeks to among other things, foster new economic engagement, promote food security, strengthen diaspora ties and respond to the climate crisis.

"Africa will shape the future — not just the future of the African people, but of the world. Africa will make the difference in tackling the most urgent challenges and seizing the opportunities we all face," the US State Department said.
