Prime Cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi has been conferred with an honorary degree from Masinde Muliro University.

The degree of Humane Letters in Peace and Sustainable Development was conferred during the university's 18th graduation ceremony on Friday.

“It is such a significant coincidence that the honour bestowed upon me is from a university named after one of the great nationalists of this country, Masinde Muliro,” Mudavadi said.

The Amani National Congress party sent their leader a congratulatory message.

“Congratulations to Prime Cabinet Secretary Dr Musalia Mudavadi for being conferred with an honorary degree of Humane Letters in Peace and Sustainable Development by  Masinde Muliro University,” the statement read.

MMUST had earlier said the Prime CS was recommended by the University Senate and the University Council for the award.

“Mudavadi is a public servant, trailblazer, diplomat and a peace maker who is now famously known as ‘a safe pair of hands.’ Kenyans remember with trepidation the ravaged economy in the early 1990s.

"He is regarded as one of the finest finance ministers. He is credited with saving the country from runaway inflation and judiciously stabilising the economy of the country as it was in tatters,” MMUST said in a notice.

MMUST further said the establishment of the Mudavadi Memorial Foundation Trust Fund, which responds to societal needs, demonstrates the Prime CS’s “immense accomplishments in sustainable development.”

The Prime Cabinet Secretary in his acceptance speech thanked the Masinde Muliro University leadership for bestowing on him the honour saying he has dedicated the honorary degree to those who have believed in him and his work to the society over the years.

He also dedicated it to all who have been injured in the country in the struggle for peace.

“In many ways, this honour reflects the efforts of the Kenyan people of all walks of life who, for the last 59 years, have worked together to restore peace, security, national unity and reconciliation. In their endeavours, these Kenyans have managed to overcome serious adversity to usher in our nation’s collective aspirations for unity and sustainable development,” Mudavadi said.

He promised to live up to the ideals and expectations of the honour saying it has been his inspiration all along to live up to the positive ideals of the founding fathers of our nation, Kenya, since independence.

The PCS noted that although Kenya has been peaceful and realised changes that propelled the country’s development to a higher level of recognition, at some point the levels of development have been accompanied by crisis and upheaval.

Mudavadi called for statesmanship and good governance, emphasising on the need for tranquillity as the country navigates the hard economic times brought about by the poor management of public resources in the past regime, the effects of COVID-19 pandemic and the huge public debt that has choked Kenya’s economic stability.

“To manage and influence our people in a collectively beneficial manner, we need long-term vision. Each of us as leaders need to understand our society’s situation, out of which we are called upon to motivate our people to keep peace and work towards sustainable prosperity.”
