Members of the Cabinet including the president will have to oversee the planting of between 200 and 500 trees at every public function they preside over.

The Cabinet reached the resolution at the fourth cabinet meeting held on Tuesday and chaired by President William Ruto.

The initiative is part of the National Tree Growing Restoration Campaign which the cabinet approved at the meeting.

"The tree growing campaign targets to mobilise the nation in planting fifteen million trees by the year 2030, translating to 30 per cent national tree cover," a statement dispatched from State House said.

The tree planting campaign is part of the long-term measures to address climate change and desertification.

The climate crisis has led to a devastating drought situation in the country which the cabinet noted had pushed over 4.35 million Kenyans on the verge of starvation and in need of humanitarian aid.

"In the discharge of the intergenerational duty to protect the environment and our heritage and splendour and enduring benefit of the present and the future generation, Cabinet resolved that all cabinet engagements presided by the President, Deputy President, Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and all other cadres of  State or Public Officers, will be marked by planting a designated minimum number of trees under various categories of between 200 and 500 seedlings," the Cabinet said.

During the meeting, the Cabinet said all drought intervention measures will be upscaled to alleviate the suffering of affected households.

"The interventions will continue targeting vulnerable individuals and households with the primary objective of saving lives and preserving livelihoods," the statement said.
