"It is with a heavy heart that I tender my resignation as a commissioner of the IEBC effective today (Friday)," he said.

"In the last few weeks, I have had serious soul searching and being a man of faith, prayed fervently so that I may have the wisdom to make a decision that is in the best interest of the country."

Ruto suspended the four on Friday morning following the recommendation of the National Assembly's Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.

JLAC was mandated with deciding on four petitions that sought the four's removal citing violation of the Constitution, gross misconduct and incompetence.

In its report on Thursday, the committee said the petitions met the threshold for removal.

“The committee recommends that the President suspends the four commissioners herein pending the tribunal verdict,” chairperson George Murugara said.

Cherera and the three others are accused of attempting to subvert the will of the people with regard to the August 9 presidential elections

Ruto on Friday appointed High Court Judge Aggrey Muchelule to chair the tribunal.

The tribunal's lead counsel will be Peter Munge Murage who Zamzam Abdi Abib will assist.

"The mandate of the Tribunal shall be to consider the Petition for the removal of (1) Juliana Whonge Cherera, (2) Francis Mathenge Wanderi, (3) Irene Cherop Masit and (4) Justus Abonyo Nyang’aya from office as members of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and to inquire into the allegations therein," the President said in a gazette notice.

After probing, the tribunal will prepare and submit a report and its recommendations there on expeditiously.
