South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro has said Trade Cabinet secretary Moses Kuria needs to appear before legislators to explain the government’s controversial decision to import maize.
While defending Kuria, Osoro said it is premature for MPs to think about impeaching the Cabinet secretary.
Osoro who spoke on Citizen TV on Thursday morning said Kuria should appear before a parliamentary committee of either the Senate or National Assembly to clarify his statement.
“It is sad that anytime somebody appears to have messed up something, we immediately start to think about how to punish him. We do not think about correcting them or rectifying the mistake,” he said.
The legislator said MPs should first move to correct the CS if he has made a wrong decision.
“We cannot have an angel from heaven come to correct things. Call the CS and let him appear before the Agriculture committee, to explain what he meant. If he has made a wrong move, correct him,” he said.
MPs from maize growing areas have begun the process of collecting signatures to initiate the removal of Kuria for allowing the importation of the grain.
This follows last week's announcement that he will be issuing a gazette notice to allow the importation of duty-free maize.
The MPs resolved to start the process of removing Kuria before they break for Christmas.
