Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru on Wednesday opened the newly built Makutano market, the county's largest exclusive tomato market.
The launch of the market brings to 16 the total number markets in the county.
Waiguru said the county is constructing a tomato factory in Kangai for value addition on the county's tomato produce.
The governor said Kirinyaga county produces 63,000 tonnes of tomatoes and earns Sh1.5 billion from the produce annually.
Construction of the factory was one of Waiguru's pledges after her reelection at the August polls.
Under the Wezesha empowerment programme, the county government has supported about 60 groups to establish greenhouses which they use to propagate tomato seedlings for sale to growers.
