Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has said that Kenyan artisans will be involved in upcoming affordable housing projects.
Hinga said that projects target to create employment for million sf unemployed Kenyans as well.
"In terms of job creation, embarking on this project will stimulate economic recovery at a local level," he said.
Hinga said that in a project where they need to build about 20,000 homes, they would require about 100,000 doors at a current estimated value of Sh1.5 billion.
"These doors must be made and produced here by our informal sectors and other small and medium sized businesses," he said.
For that to happen, he said, the Government and the Private sector need to provide them with direct income generating opportunities without middlemen involved.
He said this can also afford the common citizen, represented by Jua Kali artisans, to even own the affordable homes.
Hinga said with every affordable housing project coming up, there is an opportunity for the average Kenyan to benefit economically.
"There are mama mbogas who are cooking for builders at these sites, there are protective equipment being used at these sites," he said.
He said Kenyans should be provided avenues for earning a living on these projects.
