Pokot South MP David Pkosing has told off Trade CS Moses Kuria over what he termed as 'erratic' plans to import 10 million bags of maize.
Pkosing asked the CS to immediately stop the plan to import the grain, whether GMO or not.
The legislator said the planned importation will be detrimental to the maize farmers who spent a fortune to produce the grain.
"Kuria was my vice chair in the last Parliament and I know sometimes he is erratic. He should now know that he is a minister and should therefore stop the importation of maize with immediate effect," he said.
He said that the government should mop up maize from farmers in North Rift and only import in March next year once farmers' products have been sold.
" I am going to petition Parliament tomorrow to also discuss this issue," he said.
He said that Kenyans should be the priority and the CS should not be pushed by 'multinationals' who are keen to dispose off their 10 million bags of maize.
"I want to tell the minister that he has started on the wrong note. He must stop the importation of maize now," he held.
" We just elected a new government on very fundamental principles. One of them was not to import maize. Farmers are very bitter with CS Kuria and he should know that," he said.
Pkosing that farmers spent an average of Sh60,500 to produce 25 bags in one acre as such, farmers should be allowed to sell their produce to the government at Sh4500 per 90kg bag.
