More than 500 police officers have been deployed as reinforcement in the search of stolen guns from a patrol base in Mbita, Homa Bay county.
The officers drawn from various counties across Nyanza were deployed by regional police commander Karanja Muiruri on Thursday night.
This is to assist their Homa Bay counterparts in the heightened operations to search for the firearms stolen from Kipasi patrol base on Wednesday night.
An unknown number of people are said to have raided the base and escaped with the rifles.
The officers who were supposed to be on duty were not present when the incident happened on Wednesday night.
Police said the thieves may have had information the officers were away from the work station when they staged the raid.
They went through a window at the office formally run by a chief and broke into a steel box that had the weapons, escaping with them.

The weapons were recovered on Thursday by a search team.
“We are still pursuing the issue to know how and why it happened that way as part of efforts to get the thieves,” Kinne said.
Police said the Kipasi patrol base is usually manned by six officers.
Police authorities said on Thursday they are investigating the circumstances under which the incident happened.
Operations on search of the weapons and culprits behind their theft is on top gear amid fears they will be used in committing crime.
