Jeremiah Kioni, Fatuma Gedi miss EALA slots

The two had been nominated by Azimio to battle it out for slots at the regional assembly.

Former Ndaragua MP and Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni has missed out on the EALA slots.

Nine positions were up for grabs in the hotly contested elections held Friday by Senate and the National Assembly.

Former Garissa Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi also missed out on the prestigious representation at the regional legislative House.

Kioni managed 20 votes, one in Senate and 19 from the National Assembly.

Gedi on the other hand garnered 169 votes, 31 in Senate and 138 in the National Assembly.

Kenya Kwanza has elected five members to the East African Legislative Assembly while the minority Azimio has sent four members.

Azimio's candidates are Suleiman Shahbal, Kennedy Kalonzo, Winnie Odinga and Kanini Kega.

Hassan Omar, David Sankok, Zipporah Kering, Mwangi Maina and Iman Falhada.

In the Azimio camp, Kalonzo led with 262 votes, Winnie (247), Kega (197) while Shahbal had 181.

In the Kenya Kwanza team, Omar got 251 votes, Kering (222) Sangok  (217) Maina (208) while Falhada garnered 181 votes.

Muteti Fredrick, fronted by UDA as their favourite, emerged among the top five nominees with 189 votes but he was dropped on the gender balance rule. 

The East African Legislative Assembly has 62 members, of which each member state submits 9 elected members.

The members are elected by their respective country's national legislature.

Each member state's minister for regional cooperation also serves in the Assembly as an ex-officio member.

The responsibilities of the Assembly as stipulated under Article 49 of the East African Community Treaty includes discussing all matters pertaining to the Community and make recommendations to the Council as it may deem necessary for the implementation of the Treaty.

The House also debates and approves the budget of the Community, liaises with the National Assemblies of the Partner States on matters relating to the Community and consider annual reports on the activities of the Community, annual audit reports of the Audit Commission and any other reports referred to it by the Council among other responsibilities.
