Nairobi residents have been warned over a rise in cases of sodomy, especially in informal settlements.
Nairobi Gender-Based Violence coordinator Roselyn Mukabana said they are continuing to sensitise residents on the dangers of sexual violence.
Mukabana was speaking during an interview with Radio Africa’s Charity Chigulu on Radio Jambo, Classic, Kiss, Smooth and Gukena FM.
“Sexual violence is the most common form of gender-based violence. The cases are more common in informal settlements. The increasing trend of sodomy is alarming,” she said.
The official said areas like Embakasi, which host the Mukuru Kwa Reuben and Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums, have a high prevalence of sexual gender-based violence.
“Also Langata where we have Kibera, Dagoretti where we have Kwanagware, around the area of 56 and Ruaraka, Mathare Area 4, Mlango Kubwa and Kasarani,” she said.
Data from the Nairobi Metropolitan Services shows that Embakasi South has the highest prevalence of teenage pregnancies, accounting for 28 per cent of the county’s cases.
It is speculated that the cases are on account of the area harbouring two informal settlements.
Mukabana said that the county has identified 47 public hospitals in the city that have integrated Gender Based Violence services to help create awareness in the community.
“They include Mama Lucy and Mbagathi hospitals, Dandora 2, Kasarani and Mukuru health centers,” she said.
"The healthcare workers can educate them on how to manage survivors' recovery and assist with filing complaints to the police."
