Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi on Wednesday vowed to set a committee that will help reward and support Mau Mau freedom fighters.

Wamatangi spoke when he met a delegation of the Mau Mau Fighters led by 97-year-old Gitu WA Kahengeri and the Muthamaki of Kiama Kiama.

He added that his government, through the Honours and Awards Committee, will identify and bestow various awards on high achievers in Kiambu who have excelled in different disciplines such as education, governance, and leadership as well as social development, among others.

Wamatangi emphasized the need for Kenyans to celebrate and embrace different diverse cultures.

“A leader’s advisory council shall cultivate a culture of unity and a Secretariat for the history of Mau Mau fighters. This is entrenched in my manifesto promises which are to uphold culture to continue with a journey of making Kiambu great,” he said.

He noted that the County government will continue celebrating heroes and heroines as a way of preserving history.

In 2018, Roads CS Kipchumba Murkomen drafted the County Hall of Fame 2018 Bill which Wamatangi seconded in the senate that sought to recognize exceptional individuals.

The Bill also intended to set up mechanisms for the preservation of historical documents and facts in each of the devolved regions.

Through County Hall of Fame 2018, Murkomen said counties must appreciate outstanding citizens who were well known, respected, and admired for past achievements.

“Through this Act, there shall be a Hall of Fame in each county as an avenue through which the county governments shall provide a framework for the preservation of the history, heritage, and culture of counties,” reads the Bill, which is before the Senate awaiting its Second Reading.
