287 applied for nine EALA jobs - Committee says

The names are set to be returned to parliament by Wednesday this week.

A record 287 Kenyans have applied for the nine slots at the East Africa Legislative Assembly (Eala).

The deadline for applications was November 2.

The names have been communicated to respective political parties to nominate their preferred representatives and return the names to parliament by Wednesday this week.

“Wednesday's nomination exercise will pave the way for the election exercise scheduled on November 17 with both houses voting through secret ballot to elect the nine representatives,” a statement from Parliament reads.

The joint Committee on the election of East Africa Legislative Assembly, EALA members met on Monday for a pre-nomination briefing. 

The meeting was jointly presided over by Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye and his Counterpart from the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge was also attended by the Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung'wah, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, Kilifi Senator  Stewart Madzayo, Dan Maanzo (Makueni), and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia. 

The early morning meeting deliberated on the modalities of the nomination and election of the nine members to represent Kenya at the Arusha-based court.
