Former president of the Law Society of Kenya Nelson Havi has said the troubled Mumias Sugar company needs President William Ruto's involvement for its full revival.

Havi said if the western leaders consider having a sit down with Ruto on the issue, then it would fasten the process of it operating well once again.

"The revival of Mumias Sugar Company requires Presidential intervention just as was the case of Mombasa Port and Kenyatta University."

"Could Western Kenya elected leaders address this issue with the ever considerate and listening President William Ruto? He will resolve it in a day," he tweeted.

Last week, Ugandan-based Sarrai Group announced the Company would resume full operations this week.

Operations manager Stephen Kihumba said the company is currently operating at 25 per cent of its capacity as maintenance continues.

Kihumba said they have conducted test runs in terms of sugar production,  adding that maintenance of the factory is at 95 per cent.

He said the company is currently producing sugar in 50kg packages, adding that it will start producing 1kg and 2kg packages by next week and fully hit the market.

“Once we achieve 100 per cent operation, our focus will shift from half shift to full shift operations,” he said.

However, after the company resumed millings, current and former workers from the company renewed their calls for payments of arrears amounting up to Sh2.3 billion owed to them.

The workers are demanding that Sarrai Group and Kenya Commercial Bank initiate the process of settling their arrears.

They noted that according to a leasing bid agreement signed between Sarrai Group and receiver Managers KCB, Sarrai Group pledged to pay all the creditors both the current and former workers of the company.
