IEBC sets date for Kandara, Garissa and Elgeyo Marakwet by-elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has set the date for Kandara, Garissa Township and Elgeyo Marakwet By-elections.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati gazetted the dates for the by-elections in the areas to be on January 5, 2023.

"Following declaration of vacancies that occurred in the office of Members of National Assembly for Kandara and Garissa Township constituencies, Member of Senate for Elgeyo Marakwet County and Member for Shella Ward, Lamu County Assembly as confirmed by the respective Speakers vide letters dated 27th October 2022 for Parliamentary elections and 24th October 2022 for the County Assembly election, there shall be by-elections for Members of National Assembly for Kandara and Garissa Township constituencies, Member of Senate for Elgeyo Marakwet County and Member for Shella Ward in Lamu County," he said.

The by-elections were occasioned by the resignations of MPs who won the seats in the August 9, polls.

Aden Duale resigned as the Garissa Town MP to take up the Defense CS post.

Roads and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen landed the role after resigning as the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator.

Immediate Kandara MP Alice Wahome also resigned after landing an appointment as Water, Sanitation and Irrigation CS.

The CSs were sworn in Thursday and resumed their respective duties in the ministries.

Chebukati said each political party intending to participate in the by-elections to submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before 14th November 2022.

He further said public officers intending to contest to resign from public office within seven days of the declaration of the vacancy by the Speaker.
