The independent police oversight Authority wants the Internal Affairs Unit of the police to stop investigating the members of the defunct SSU squad.

Through its board, Ipoa says it is the one that should conduct the probe because IAU is a police unit that cannot investigate itself.

"We are concerned that the IAU is investigating the members of the unit for the alleged atrocities committed by the members. We are the ones who should be dealing with the matter," said JM Waiganjo, a member of the board.

The authority says it fears the IAU probe may not be as exhaustive and that there are safeguards to ensure transparency.

The body also said it is investigating various cases of police wrongdoings ranging from the dumping of bodies in River Yala and various disappearances.
