Uganda has distanced itself from the statements issued on Monday by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of the country's president Yoweri Museveni, on capturing Nairobi.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday,  the neighbouring country said it treasures the bilateral relation between its people and Kenyans.

It expressed its desire in continuing to build a peaceful and unified East African region owing to the ties in shared history and values.

"To this end, the Government of the Republic of Uganda wishes to reiterate its commitment to good neighbourliness, peaceful co-existence and cooperation," it said.

The Ministry clarified that it does not conduct its policies or any official business through social media.

"The Government of Uganda, therefore, wishes to reiterate its cordial relationship with the Republic of Kenya and assure the people and the Kenyan government of our harmonious relationship that we value," it added.

On Monday, Muhoozi who was the commander of the land forces of the Uganda People's Defence Force tweeted that it would take him and his forces less than two weeks to take over Nairobi.

"It wouldn't take us, my army and me, 2 weeks to capture Nairobi," he tweeted.

The controversial tweet was met with reactions from Kenyans, prompting a reply from Muhoozi.

"I'm happy that members of our district in Kenya, have responded enthusiastically to my tweet. It's still 2 weeks to Nairobi! After our army captures Nairobi, where should I live? Westlands? Riverside?" he asked.

Earlier on Tuesday, appointed Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua said he had met with Uganda High Commissioner to Kenya Hassan Galiwango.

"This morning I shared a social cup of tea with Amb. Dr Hassan Galiwango - Uganda High Commissioner to Kenya," he tweeted.

"We discussed interesting matters. All is well."

The former Machakos Governor also replied to Uganda's statement shortly after it was released.

"We appreciate the clarification," he tweeted.
