A guard who claimed to be unwell on the night a tenant was robbed of cash and goods worth Sh1.2 million was Tuesday charged with robbery with violence.
Benjamin Wasonga was charged with the second count of neglect to prevent a felony when armed robbers invaded the estate and robbed one Peter Odhiambo at his house.
The court heard that he committed the offence on October 11 at Woodley court in Jamhuri estate within Nairobi county jointly with others not before court.
Wesonga was charged before Kibera senior principal magistrate Esther Boke and denied the charges.
According to the court papers, the accused person felt unwell on the night of the robbery and went to wake up the caretaker for help.
He requested the caretaker to give him some water to enable him swallow some painkillers. That same moment, the robbers walked into the estate and robbed the complainant.
The court was informed that Odhiambo was robbed of a Samsung mobile phone, Nokia mobile phone, assorted clothes, assorted shoes, 10 assorted laptops, two passports, a Canon camera, a safe containing Sh400,000 all valued at Sh1.2 million
The court was told the property belonged to Refugee Center International. Wasonga's alleged accomplices are still at large.
The accused person denied the charges and pleaded with the court for lenient bond terms.
Court prosecutor Nancy Kerubo did not object to his release on bond.
The court set him free on Sh500,000 bond with a surety of similar amount and directed that the case be mentioned on October 18.
