Uhuru accorded last hurrah as sign of honour

The Kenya Defence Forces has accorded President Uhuru Kenyatta the last hurrah as a sign of honour.

Giving the C-in-C his last hurrah signifies an end to the relationship between the commander and the troops.

They will honour him and give him gifts at a special luncheon. They will grant him salutes before his presidential standard is lowered at next week’s event in Kasarani.

On Friday, the KDF at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Nairobi held their farewell to their Commander in Chief.

It is the third such ceremony after President Daniel Arap Moi’s in 2002 and Mwai Kibaki’s in March 2013.

When he arrived at the venue, President Uhuru Kenyatta atop his ceremonial car acknowledged greetings from soldiers.

This is among the final functions attended by an outgoing president before the official handing over to a successor.

The farewell parade was led by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Robert Kariuki Kibochi, among other officers.

According to the Department of Defence, the ceremony is in line with military traditions and customs of holding farewell ceremonies for outgoing presidents, who are also Commanders-in-Chief of the Forces.

The event will then proceed for the Pulling Out of the outgoing Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces in the afternoon at Defence Headquarters in Hurlingham, Nairobi,

Next week Tuesday, President-elect William Ruto will be sworn in as Kenya's fifth president, succeeding Uhuru.
