As early as 7 am, police had been spotted around Parliament Road as MPs-elect started to arrive, ready to take the oath of office and elect their speakers and deputies.
According to the provisions of article 126(2) of the constitution, “Whenever a new House is elected, the President, by notice in the Gazette, shall appoint the place and date for the first sitting of the new House, which shall not be more than thirty days after the election”.
On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta called the first sitting of the National Assembly through the office of the Clerk of the National Assembly on or before September 9.
Serah Kioko who is the acting Clerk of the National Assembly took over from Michael Sialai, who retired in July.
Kioko will be expected to exercise sole authority, to administer the oath of office to the newly elected MPs.
