President-elect William Ruto has disclosed that he has not spoken to President Uhuru Kenyatta for many months.

This is despite the fact that he was declared President-elect by the IEBC on August 15. It would be expected that the sitting president would have engaged him on transition matters.

In his maiden speech to the nation after the Supreme Court upheld his victory, Ruto said he will be reaching out to the outgoing President after his speech to discuss transition modalities.

"I will make a call to President Uhuru Kenyatta," Ruto said.

“We have not talked in months but shortly I will make a call so that we can have a conversation on the process of transition.”

Ruto said Uhuru worked hard in his own ways in backing his favourite candidate Raila Odinga but noted that Kenyans made their decision.

“We have no issue with the democratic choices of Kenyans. When I supported him I did not give him condition to support me,” he said.

“We will remain, friends, as we have been in the context of where we are and we look forward to building n the foundation that is there.”

On Sunday, Ruto asked Kenyans to pray for Uhuru for the country to have a peaceful and smooth transition.

Ruto said the outgoing President needs to be put in prayers for God's wisdom as he prepares to hand over power.

Ruto and Uhuru, former political soulmates, have had strained relations since the March 8, 2018 handshake that bred new friendship between the head of state and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
