Kakamega governor-elect Fernandes Barasa has pledged to prioritize reviving Mumias sugar company within the first 100 days in office.

According to Barasa, the revival of the sugar factory had failed before due to political cartels.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Tuesday night, Barasa said that he will support initiatives from investors to boost the sugar company.

"I believe that it is something that I can take as a priority item using my network in government to ensure that this local investor is given a lot of support. In my next 100 days, I will give it a priority so that farmers can go back to planting sugarcane," Barasa said.

He added that under his leadership, he will ensure farmers are sensitized to embark on planting sugarcane.

"Most of the farmers have actually diversified and they are not planting sugarcane anymore because they feel it is not well paying," he said.

Barasa said that Kakamega residents will benefit from other products apart from sugar production.

Barasa also promised to prioritise healthcare and agriculture.

"I will ensure we have level 4 hospitals in all the 12 constituencies and I tend to invest in agriculture in order to address the issue of food security," Barasa said.

Barasa clinched the Kakamega gubernatorial seat in the just concluded mini- elections.

He won the seat by garnering 192,768 votes against his closest challenger Cleophas Malala of ANC who had 159,275 votes.
