Celebrations rocked the Mombasa Central business district on Monday night after it became apparent that ODM governor candidate Abdulswamad Nassir was leading in many polling centres.

Nassir commanded unassailable lead against his main challenger Hassan Omar of UDA.

Outgoing Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Nassir led the ODM supporters in celebrating around the streets of Mombasa.

Thousands of supporters converged at Treasury Square round-about to celebrate.

Leaders who spoke during the night mocked the Kenya Kwanza team of 'chest thumping' before the election day.

"They came here and started abusing us, we never said a word. They started planning how they will win, we kept quiet. Tonight, we have shown them dust," Joho said.

Joho said his friendship with Nassir started long before they joined politics.

"We have been brothers before politics, we have been brothers in politics and we will continue being brothers after politics,"  he said.

Joho also called Raila Odinga on phone to talk to the elated crowd.

Raila thanked the supporters through the phone call.

"Congratulations to the people of Mombasa," Raila said.

The outgoing governor, who had been nicknamed 'Katerina' by the Kenya Kwanza team, asked the DJ to play that famous social media song 'Katerina' and led the supporters to dance to it.

Nassir thanked his supporters, the leaders who came and campaigned for him and ensuring Mombasa remains a Raila Odinga stronghold.

"We are grateful for your support," he said.

Other leaders who had accompanied Joho and Nassir were former National Assembly deputy speaker Farah Maalim, and Garissa Senator Abdulkadir Haji.

The Mombasa County Returning Officer Swalha Yusuf is today expected to make the final results after tallying is completed in all the six constituencies of Mombasa.
