Jubilee picks Wangoro Mwangi for Nairobi assembly speaker post

Embakasi West MP elect Mark Muriithi Mwenje has confirmed that the Jubilee party has written to affiliate parties to support its candidate.

Jubilee party has appointed Harrison Wangoro Mwangi as its candidate for the speaker position of the County Assembly of Nairobi.

Wangoro Mwangi was vying for Embakasi North parliamentary seat on a Jubilee ticket but lost to a UDA candidate.

His appointment was confirmed by party secretary general Jeremiah Kioni on Thursday at Jubilee’s headquarters in Pangani.

“The Jubilee party wishes to nominate Wangoro Mwangi as the Nairobi County speaker,” Kioni stated.

In 2013, Wangoro Mwangi applied and was shortlisted for the position of speaker of the National assembly on a TNA ticket but dropped down for speaker Justin Muturi.

Azimio la Umoja in Nairobi County in just concluded election got the following seats, Jubilee (6), ODM (35), and Wiper party (4).

On the other hand, Kenya Kwanza led by DP Ruto scored, UDA (35), and Chama cha Kazi (I).

There were only two candidates elected on independent tickets.

IEBC is yet to conduct election in Utawala and Mukuru Kwa Njenga .

Speaking to Star, Wangoro Mwangi (Jubilee) has said that the Azimio leadership has agreed that Jubilee takes the speaker position.

“I’m competent enough for the position of the speaker and I will deliver to the people of Nairobi because of the management skills I poses,” Wangoro said.

Embakasi West MP-elect Mark Muriithi Mwenje has confirmed that the Jubilee party has written to affiliate parties to support its candidate.

He said that the decision was arrived at after Edwin Sifuna won the senator position while Esther Passaris was elected as women representative. Both are ODM candidates.

“I’m in support of the Jubilee’s candidate and have confidence in him and his ability to lead the assembly," Mureithi said.

A reliable source within ODM has said that they are working on the blessing of Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

He further noted that there was a proposal that the position of deputy speaker be given to the Wiper party, majority leader (ODM) and chief whip (Jubilee).

He said that during the recent meeting at Emory hotel Kileleshwa, the Nairobi team agreed that the Jubilee party deserve the speaker seat to compensate after they failed to capture the governor post.

“We have zeroed in as Azimio party and agreed to support Wangoro Mwangi as a Jubilee candidate."
