Religious leaders have called on Kenyans and leaders to maintain peace following the declaration of the 5th President-elect by the IEBC on Monday at the Bomas of Kenya.

Speaking during a press conference by the NCCK on Monday in Karen, Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri, Anthony Muheria prayed for peace.

The clergy urged the candidates to make public commitments to maintain peace, respect the rule of law, and avoid incitement and use of foul language and hate speech.

“We send peace to Kenyans, our president-elect and candidates that lost the vote count. May peace rest in their hearts and their families,” he said.

The clergy also asked all the political candidates to respect the will of the people by accepting the outcome of the elections on August 9, saying this will demonstrate maturity and respect to the people of Kenya.

“In case of disputes on the electoral outcome, we urge the complainants to seek judicial mechanism of dispute resolution as set out in the law."

Aglican Bishop of Kenya Jackson Ole Sapit and other religious leaders were present.

The clergy also asked the youth not to accept to be used by politicians to perpetrate violence.
