Man lynched for stealing vegetables in Machakos

A man has been lynched for allegedly stealing vegetables in Kangundo, Machakos County.

Kangundo Subcounty police commander Zacharia Bitok said the deceased, in his early 20s, was killed after he was caught stealing kales at a farm in Kangundo in the wee hours of Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 4.00 am. 

Bitok said the man was beaten to death by the public before they burnt his body.

“The suspect was arrested stealing kales near Kangundo High School at around 4.00 am. The incident was reported to Kangundo police station on Sunday,” Bitok told the Star on phone on Sunday.

Bitok said there were claims that theft of vegetables was rampant in the area.

“The night guards caught the deceased before they raised alarm which attracted the public who responded to the scene and lynched him,” an eyewitness told the Star.

The police boss said the deceased whose identity was not immediately established was subjected to mob injustice.

He warned the public against taking law into their own hands.

Bitok said the public should report to police any incidences for action.

“We are advising the public to report incidences to the police. They shouldn’t take law into their own hands,” Bitok said.
