Senior Counsel Tom Ojienda has won the Kisumu Senate seat with a wide margin.
He garnered 413,121 votes against his challenger Enos Okolo of Jubilee who got 15,575 votes.
Kisumu county has 606,754 registered voters.
County IEBC returning officer Solomon Mudanya announced the results on Friday at the tallying centre, Tom Mboya Labour College.
Mudanya handed the certificate to the Senator-elect Ojienda who vied for the position on the ODM party ticket.
The incumbent Senator Fred Outa did not defend the seat. He opted to back former Kisumu governor Jack Ranguma who was eying to unseat governor Anyang Nyong’o.
Speaking after being declared the winner, Ojienda thanked the people of Kisumu for overwhelmingly voting for him.
“You have given us a mandate to work for you and bring change that you desire,” he said.
He pledged to work with all the elected leaders to help spur the county's social-economic growth.
Ojienda said the focus now shifts on Azimio flagbearer Raila Odinga’s presidential bid to ensure he secures the top seat. He also thanked the IEBC for conducting an election that meets the requirements of Article 86 and 81.
"Today I am happy that I have been declared the Senator-elect for Kisumu county with 97 per cent of the votes," he said.
Ojienda said they will serve the people together with Nyong'o and Ruth Odinga, Kisumu Woman Representative-elect.
Clearly, we have a great vision for the people of Kisumu to ensure we deliver through the industries that are available within Kisumu such as agriculture and other framework that is set," he said.
Ojienda added that they will also ensure the Kisumu port delivers to the people. "We are waiting for the announcement of the presidential results and we are optimistic that Raila will carry the day," he added.
On April 19, Ojienda bagged the ODM ticket after garnering 39,336 votes against his closest challenger nominated Senator Rose Nyamunga who got 18,319.
Former assistant minister for Education and Muhoroni MP Ayiecho Olweny got 10,794 votes emerging a distant third.
Meanwhile, Kisumu ODM candidate Ruth Odinga won the woman representative seat.
Ruth garnered 304,419 votes against her closest competitor Valentine Anyango of the Movement for Democracy and Growth party (MDG) who got 80,117 votes. Rose Kisia, an independent candidate, came third with 36,692 votes.
She battled for the seat against three other candidates. Ruth is the sister to Raila.
She thanked residents of Kisumu for voting for her and promised to deliver on her election pledges.
“This is a very special occasion for the people of Kisumu. We thank the IEBC for conducting a peaceful election. We are going to work for the women, youths and people of Kisumu at large,” she said.
Ruth pledged to work with Nyong’o and Ojienda alongside all elected leaders in the county to ensure intended development projects are realised.
She exuded confidence that Raila will win the presidency. “I have no doubt about that and let us maintain peace,” Ruth added.
