Governor Nyong'o pledges to continue with development agenda

He garnered 319,957 votes, says with a combined effort, they will see devolution fully realised in the country

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong’o and deputy governor Mathews Owili have been re-elected for the second term.

Nyong’o garnered 319,957 votes.

Former governor Jack Ranguma came second with 100,600 votes.

Ranguma had teamed up with outgoing Senator Fred Outa, former Kisumu speaker Onyango Oloo and former Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura in his bid to unseat Nyong’o.

Nyong’o defended the seat on the ODM ticket, while Ranguma vied on the MDG ticket. The race attracted four candidates.

Beryl Meso, an Independent candidate got 3,383 votes, while Erick Otieno garnered 2,705 votes.

County IEBC returning officer Solomon Mudanya announced the results at Tom Mboya Labour College tallying centre on Friday.

Kisumu has 606,754 registered voters.

Mudanya presented the certificate to Nyong’o.  

He lauded Mudanya and the team for delivering a credible election.

Nyong'o pledged to continue with his development agenda.

He cited health, education, environment, agriculture and livelihood sustainability because they relate to the basic needs of the people.

Nyong’o lauded the people of Kisumu for voting for him to serve another term.

“We are ready to ensure we deliver on our election pledges on matters of development,” he said.

He also commended President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the swift development they have done at Kisumu Port, which he said will create job and business opportunities for the people.

“My government was committed to reviving maritime transport in Kisumu but Uhuru and Raila knew how to do it better,” Nyong’o said.

“We now have shipbuilding in Kisumu and we are looking for Kisumu to be a shipbuilding hub in the world.”

Nyong’o said with a combined effort they will see devolution fully realised in the country.

“I want to thank my campaign team, MCAs and MPs for a job well done. This is the team that has made our elections possible,” he said.

Nyong’o extended an olive branch to his competitor, saying elections are over.

“The game is over. The referee has blown the whistle. We will meet them in another game. For me, this is the end and I will cheer you on,” he said.
