Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has said the information about missing 3,000 Kenya Integrated Electoral Management System kits is false and misleading.
In a statement on Wednesday, the commission chairman Wafula Chebukati said the auditor general report made reference to BVR kits and not KIEMS kits.
"BVR kits are used for voter registration and not voting, the commission procured 15,000 BVR kits in 2012 that have technically reached the end of life," Chebukati said.
He said the commission keeps an inventory of all its kits and in the event of any loss, the kit will be blocked from doing any transaction on the system.
Chebukati's statement came three months after the Auditor General unearthed the disappearance of critical election technology equipment that included Biometric Voter Registration kits and laptops.
In a report dated March 14, 2022, and tabled in the National Assembly, Auditor General Nancy Gathungu revealed that 3,925 BVR kits were missing as well as seven KIEMS kits.
The report further revealed that 392 laptops, 1,315 hard disks, 116 fingerprint scanners, 408 webcams, 1,062 USB hubs, 104 chargers and 8,041 flash disks were missing.
It is not known the extent to which the missing critical election equipment would impact the identification of voters and transmission of election results on August 9.
Chebukati further said all KIEMS kits have been prepared and ready for dispatch to the returning officers before deployment of elections officials and materials.
He also said the kits have accompanying power banks which will be fully charged before deployment.
