Former Tanzania president Jakaya Kikwete met with NCIC on Tuesday to deliberate on the state of election preparedness.

Jakaya, who was earlier named as the East African Community's chief observer for Tuesday election, held a meeting at Serena Hotel to focus on the compliance of the electoral process.

“As a region, we have a conviction that regional observation is critical to enhancing the credibility of the elections, reinforcing the work of domestic observer groups and enhancing public confidence in the entire electoral process,” Jakaya said.

EAC and National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) also deliberated on objective recommendations for continuous improvement in the conduct of elections.

EAC chair who arrived in the country on August 1, will be in the country on August 12, 2022, to observe all the aspects of the election.

NCIC chair Samuel Kobia has been on board to ensure utterances that can stimulate violence are avoided during the campaign period.

Jakaya noted that the mandate to observe elections in partner states is governed by the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community and the EAC Principles for the Observation and Evaluation of Elections.

Article 6 of the EAC Treaty on Fundamental Principles of the Community requires member states to uphold “good governance, including adherence to the principles of democracy, the rule of law, accountability and transparency, among other values by the provisions of the African Charter on Human and People’s rights.”
