Former Nyatike MP Edick Omondi Anyanga was Wednesday arraigned in a Migori law court over shooting.

Anyanga did not take a plea.

The state seeks to press charges after the former legislator was involved in a gun drama that resulted in the alleged shooting and injuring of Justus Ochieng, 35, on Saturday midnight at Lwanda Konyango centre in Nyatike.

Appearing before senior principal magistrate Justice Johnston Munguti, Anyanga through his lawyers, did not plead to any of the allegations.

His plea date has been pushed to August 25 after being released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 or Sh1 million bond.

The former MP failed to get charged after court prosecutor Tom Maatwa asked the court for additional two weeks so that they would forward the candidate’s file to the regional prosecutor for perusal.

Maatwa told the court that there were matters to be investigated further.

Anyanga’s advocate Paul Amuga told the court the suspect was arrested and arraigned before investigations were completed.

He further told the court that the candidate was supposed to be the complainant as he is the one who was attacked.

“That is what we want the investigative officer to look into. We plead for leniency and that the accused be released on personal bond,” Amuga said.

Senior principal magistrate Munguti released Anyanga on bond, saying that he had accepted the request for the Director of Public Prosecutions to be given time to consult with the regional office.

Police on Saturday recovered a pistol, SIG Sauer, 2022 serial number SP2022 and a magazine of 12 live ammunition calibre 9mm at his home.

Anyanga, in earlier interviews, said he shot in the air to defend himself against a gang on the night of the shooting.

The accused served as Nyatike MP from 2013 to 2017 under the ODM party before being toppled by Tom Odege.

Anyanga is seeking to reclaim the seat he lost in 2017 through the UPIA party ticket in the forthcoming election.
