Media Council of Kenya (MCK) CEO David Omwoyo has urged media and  security agencies to work together ahead of the August polls.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting on Tuesday, Omwoyo appealed to security agencies to constantly engage the media through clear communication channels to avoid misreporting.

"The media and security forces are some of the most misjudged. Security agencies and media have common roles in society, which most do not understand, sometimes leading to conflicts. I urge for collaborations especially at this critical time in our country," said Omwoyo.

He urged security agencies to accord space for the media as to allow them to undertake their rightful duties because they play a critical role in society.

Chairman of Regional Security Committee William Thuku assured journalists of their protection during election period.

"Kenya respects freedom of the media. I urge the media to uphold responsible journalism especially at this time. Nobody is going to harass journalists, provided they conduct themselves professionally. We will protect journalists, just like other Kenyans," Thuku said.

He urged the media to avoid sensational reporting around elections.

Thuku called on MCK to report quack journalists, saying they dent the credibility of Kenya's media industry.
