Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja has promised traders at the Gikomba market of better working conditions if he wins the August 9 elections.

Speaking on Monday during a Kenya Kwanza campaign rally at the market, Sakaja said he will initiate changes in the city inspectorate department within 20 days of taking office and transfer officers who extort traders.

"Najua hapa kuna watu wa kanjo wanawanyanyasa kila siku. Kwanza hapa kuna jamaa anaitwa kapumpum huyo tutamtransfer aende dog unit," Sakaja said.

(I know there are inspectorate officers extorting you daily. There is one called Kapumpum, we will move him to dog unit)

Sakaja said it's paramount for city askaris to understand that traders are customers of the county government and should be treated with dignity.

He said upon entry into office, he will ensure all boda boda motorcycles that have been impounded and held at various police stations in the city are released to the owners.

"Tarehe tisa mitaziendea zote ili muendelea kufanya kazi (On August 9 you will go for them so that you can continue working)," Sakaja said.

The senator reintegrated that he will merge all business and statutory licenses into one to reduce the time traders waste moving from one office to the other.

In a TV interview on June 29, Sakaja said the numerous licenses traders are required to acquire are not only slowing down businesses but paving way for corruption as well.

Businesses are required to have multiple licenses ranging from trade, Nema, PRISK, fire, health, MCSK, advertising signage license and food hygiene, all issued by different statutory bodies.

DP William Ruto told the traders at Gikomba that Kenya Kwanza will protect small businesses, invest in an enabling environment and establish a fund to help them expand.
