City residents will be allowed to participate in the upcoming Nairobi County governor debate set to take place next week on Monday, July 11, 2022.
As announced by the steering secretariat committee, the public has until Saturday, July 9, 2022, at midnight to send the questions they would like to get answered by the candidates.
“We commit that the questions will be forwarded to the moderators who will select and endeavor to have as many questions as possible answered by the Nairobi Gubernatorial candidates during the debates," reads a statement by the secretariat.
The questions can be shared in various formats across different platforms starting with texts which can be sent to 0796560560 or via shortcode 22843
Using the same number, questions can be sent on video, with Kenyans advised to keep it under 30 seconds.
Also, questions can be sent on the Google Doc that is administered by the debates' organisers or submitted via email [email protected] or by logging on to the 2022 Presidential Debates website or via the email – [email protected].
The Nairobi Gubernatorial debate will be held at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa from 5 pm to 10 pm.
The race has 8 candidates, including Polycarp Igathe of the Jubilee party and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Johnson Sakaja.
Others include former journalist Denise Kodhi flying the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ticket and Tech-entrepreneur Harman Grewal on a Safina party ticket and Kenneth Nyamwamu of the United Progressive Alliance ticket.
Going on an independent ticket is Esther Waringa, Nancy Wambui and businesswoman Agnes Kagure.
All have been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to vie for the position
The debate has been split into two sessions with the first segment running between 6 pm to 7:30 pm.
According to the secretariat, this segment will feature gubernatorial candidates whose popularity ratings, based on three recent opinion polls, stand below 5 per cent.
The second section will run from 8 to 9:30 pm and will involve candidates who have polled above 5 per cent in the same opinion surveys.
In the latest opinion polls released by Infotrak this week, Sakaja was the most preferred candidate in Nairobi at 39 per cent, followed by Igathe at 33 per cent and Kagure came in third with 0.4 per cent.
Last month polls released by TIFA also placed Sakaja as the most preferred candidate for the Nairobi governor seat, with 40 per cent of respondents supporting his bid.
He was closely followed by Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya flagbearer Polycarp Igathe at 32 per cent.
