Deputy President William Ruto will be back on the Nairobi campaign trail with a planned mega rally at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi, on Sunday.
The last time the Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate was at Jacaranda, chaos rocked the rally forcing the police to lob tear gas in order to maintain the situation.
Though the event proceeded to the end, Ruto blamed his main competitor, Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga for encouraging violence amongst his supporters in his perceived strongholds.
Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement party, however, distanced itself from the mayhem stating that it was a desperate attempt by the DP’s camp to distract the public from the incitement allegations it was facing.
The rally will be held the same day, Nairobi Gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja is set to know his fate from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s Dispute Resolution Committee.
Sakaja’s candidature for Nairobi governor has been hanging on the balance after four complaints were filed with the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee, challenging the credibility of academic papers he presented to the commission for clearance.
The mega rally is expected to be attended by thousands of Nairobi residents and several Kenya Kwanza coalition leaders from the Nairobi region.
The Jacaranda grounds has been a favourite spot for a series of political meetings especially during elections.
The venue is perhaps best remembered for the drama that surrounded it in the aftermath of the 2017 General election, whereby truck loads of faeces were dumped at the grounds in efforts to prevent Raila from holding a political rally.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino in 2020 cautioned Ruto and his allies against distributing their wheelbarrows in the constituency.
