A roadside rally by former Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma and Senator Fred Outa was Monday evening dispersed by police using teargas.

Ranguma who had just been cleared by IEBC to vie for the county's top seat on MDG party ticket had planned a series of rallies within the city.

He was to hold rallies in Nyalenda Ring Road, Kondele stop over, Kibuye stop over, Jubilee market stop over before holding the main rally at Juakali Railways ground.

However, the group was denied access to the city center after they encountered barricaded roads at Patels roundabout.

There convoy was stopped and attempts to negotiate with police officers to allow them proceed to Jubilee market were futile.

The officers claimed campaigns were not allowed within the CBD following a ban by the county government through the city department last week.

The politicians and their supporters then opted to alight from their vehicles and walk towards the city centre.

However, police hurled teargas canisters at the group as they approached the Jubilee market.

Women who were selling goods, boda boda operators and passersby were caught in the melee.

Some of the women who spoke to Star condemned the incident wondering why teargas canisters had to be used where they were.

"We have school going children coming back from schools, traders everywhere going about their business, then we are teargassed for no reason. Let people campaign in peace," Martha Okulo said.

Ranguma said that he will not be intimidated by the police.

Senator Outa condemned the actions by the police.

Outa said IEBC had given candidates time to campaign and wondered why they are being teargassed.

Ranguma later addressed a rally at Juakali grounds where he told the artisans that his administration will not interfere with their activities should he win the August 9 election.
