Police arrest nine suspects, recover seven rifles in Isiolo

At least nine suspects believed to be members of a militia group were arrested, and seven rifles were recovered in an ongoing security operation in Kom area, Merti Sub-County, Isiolo County.

The weapons included six AK47 rifles, an FN firearm, 16 magazines, a pair of jungle police uniforms and several rounds of ammunition.

The recoveries were made Wednesday when a multi-agency team raided the area. The teams have been conducting an operation in the area for a month since May 2.

Officials said the operation is bearing fruits because there have been almost zero incidents of insecurity in the area in the past few days.

The suspects were undergoing interrogation to get more information from them on their operations, police said.

Police spokesman Bruno Shioso said they hope to get more information from the suspects.

The recovery came days after the government ordered an immediate ban on unlicensed mining activities in the Kom region of Merti sub-county.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i said the operation which will last for 30 days with the option of an extension, will run in tandem with a disarmament exercise targeting illegal guns and ammunition.

So far, almost two dozen of arms have been recovered in the operation.
