Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said that he will continue to serve the people of Mombasa.

In a statement on Tuesday, Sonko who is seeking the Mombasa gubernatorial seat said not even the various interim court orders will slow him down.

The flamboyant politician insisted that the law is very clear, exuding confidence that he will have the last laugh.

"Hizi ma interim orders za kuni block hazitatu slow down tusifanyie wanainchi kazi. The law is very clear, let's see who will laugh mwisho," Sonko tweeted.

This loosely translates to, "These interim orders to stop me will not slow us down. The law is very clear let's see who will have the last laugh."

The former Nairobi governor's remarks come amidst various petitions seeking to have him barred from vying for public office because he was impeached.

Individuals and lobby groups have been calling on relevant institutions to stop Sonko and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu from holding any public office.

On May 10, a court stopped the Independent Electoral and Boubaries Commission from clearing impeached governors Mike Sonko and Ferdinand Waititu to participate in the August 9 polls.

Justice Reuben Nyakundi, following a petition by Silvester Kipkemoi, ordered that IEBC stops any further engagements with Sonko and Waititu in regards to the August 9 election, pending the hearing.

“Given the statutory and constitutional timelines of our electoral cycle, an interim interdict grounded on relief No.2 of the application do issue against the second respondent (IEBC) pending the hearing,” the order seen by the Star read.

The petitioner moved to court on grounds of the suitability and eligibility of the two politicians, in anticipation that they were due to present their nomination papers to the IEBC.

Kipekemi prayed that pending the inter-parties hearing and determination of the petition, the court issues conservatory orders restraining the commission from clearing the two to contest the polls.

Sonko was impeached as Nairobi governor in December 2020.

Waititu on the other hand is seeking to reclaim his Kiambu governor seat but failed in the UDA nominations, which Senator Kimani Wamatangi won.
