Independence party Kanu has committed to remain steadfast in Raila Odinga-led Azimio La Umoja- One Kenya Coalition.
Secretary-General Nick Salat said Kanu does not have any plans of leaving the coalition to team up with other formations or pursue its ambitions solo.
Speaking at Kenyatta International Convention Centre on Monday during an event to unveil Raila’s running mate, Salat said Kanu is in Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition to stay.
“I want to assure the fifth president of the republic Kenya that this time round, count Kanu in Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition. We are here to stay and we will fight for you because this is the winning team,” added.
His remarks seemed to distance Kanu from threats by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to ditch Azimio La Umoja- One Kenya Coalition.
Kana and Wiper were among the parties that founded the One Kenya Alliance.
During the event, Raila announced Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua as his running mate in the upcoming August 9, General Elections.
Kanu chairman Gideon Moi briefly attended Raila’s function as he walked out before the event commenced and headed to the SKM Command Centre in Karen where Kalonzo had promised to make an “extremely important announcement”.
Kalonzo announced he had defected from the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition after missing out on the coalition's party running mate slot.
He further announced he will be contesting for the presidency and named Andrew Leteipa Ole Sunkuli as his running mate.
Kalonzo indicated that he decided to jump ship after being shortchanged in the Azimio alliance where he hoped to be picked as Raila Odinga’s running mate.
The political alliance between Kalonzo and Moi appeared to face the litmus as the Kanu boss has been a key player and supporter of the Wiper party leader’s political ambitions in the August 9 race.
At the event in Karen, Kalonzo received Moi but the Kanu chairman did not give any remarks.
Moi and Kalonzo held talks in Nairobi on Sunday, with details of the meeting remaining scanty.
In his address at KICC, Salat said leaders should learn to make decisions and stand by them.
“Not having a stand is a very bad thing. It is a very thing, especially for leaders,” he stated.
Salat congratulated Karua for being named as the Azimio runningmate.
“I want to congratulate Martha. I am happy to see the fifth president pick a woman to be his deputy. It is a gift to all women including my daughters,” he added.
