Nominated Senator Beth Mugo now wants the Thika superhighway to be named after the late President Mwai Kibaki.

In an interview with Citizen TV, Mugo said Kibaki deserves a project such as the Thika superhighway to be named after him because of the development projects he initiated for Kenyans.

She recounted how the late Kibaki vehemently opposed the naming of projects after him noting that it was an act of selfishness.

"Instead of him naming roads after himself even when we told him that he should, he refused and said no," Mugo said.

Mugo appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider the proposal saying Kibaki deserves it because of his legacy.

"I hope the President and those who are involved in such processes would consider it," she added.

Earlier, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula noted that the late Kibaki was not selfish by virtue of being against the idea of public infrastructure projects being named after him.

Wetangula described Kibaki as a man who was not born great, but acquired greatness through sheer hard work, commitment and patriotism for his country.

"We have many places that should be named after him. In fact, Senator Samuel Poghisio should bring a motion in this House, so that we name some national icons, one or two or three after this great man," Wetangula said.

Kibaki died at the age of 90 at his home in Othaya, Nyeri County.
