• Kidero announced his intentions to run independently on Sartuday after Women Representative Gladys Wanga was presented with the ODM nomination ticket.
• He added decided to vie independently as he was being pressured to go for the seat so that he can provide good leadership for Homa Bay residents.
The Registrar of political parties Anne Nderitu has cleared Former Nairobi county boss Evans Kidero to vie for the Homa Bay governor seat on an independent ticket.
Nderitu confirmed on Friday that Kidero is not a member of any political party and can now vie for the seat as an independent candidate.
"Pursuant to Article 85 of the Constitution and section 34(fa) of the Political Parties Act, 2011, Evans Odhiambo Kidero is not a member of any registered political party," a letter by Nderitu said.
Kidero announced his intentions to run independently on Saturday after Homa Bay Women Representative Gladys Wanga was presented with the ODM nomination ticket.
Wanga is also seeking to succeed incumbent Governor Cyprian Awiti.
Kidero said he was not consulted in the consensus meeting that saw the ticket handed to Wanga.
“I was not called for any meeting nor did I agree with the issuance of the ticket," he said.
He added that he was going to vie independently as he was being pressured to go for the seat so that he can provide good leadership for Homa Bay residents.
“I am contesting this seat as an independent candidate because of the pressure from people of Homa Bay who want good leadership,” he said.
On Tuesday, some of the Homa Bay political aspirants criticized Kidero's decision.
The group, led by Karachuonyo MP aspirant Sammy Owino, said they supported ODM's decision and the consensus that saw Wanga as the ticker bearer.
They further said that Kidero was nurturing confusion and division in the county by standing alone.
However, on Saturday as Kidero announced his stand, he affirmed that his candidature is not a fight with Raila.
“I am not fighting Raila in my push to become the next Governor of Homa Bay."
