The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has denied claims of favouritism when hiring staff.

Speaking on Thursday, Haji said that he was aware of the allegations in which he is accused of hiring people from the same religion.

He insisted that the constitution has affirmative action clauses which require that we have equal representation of all tribes in the country.

"These are people trying hard to bring me down, they are people on a smear campaign," Haji said on Radio Jambo.

The DPP said that the list presented as proof was of 45 people from the Islam religion who were only shortlisted for interviews.

He added that the list has a total of 148 names out of which, 103 are Christians.

"Muslims are not only Somalis and Arabs... The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) is chaired by Hassan ole Naado who is not a Somali or Arab."

An activist had moved to court challenging the list of people who had been shortlisted for job interviews in the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions.

Through lawyer Danstan Omari, Memba Ocharo accused the DPP of nepotism and wanted the court to stop Haji from proceeding with interviews.

According to the activist, the DPP had shortlisted candidates from the same religious and ethnic background as him.

In December last year, the ODPP announced that it would recruit over 150 prosecutors from marginalised communities to deal with rising FGM, GBV, rape and defilement.
