Deputy President William Ruto has said the Supreme Court’s verdict on the BBI process is an eye opener for Kenyans.

Ruto said Thursday’s judgment by the highest court on land, that the constitution amendment process was illegal, made Kenyans wiser.

The DP spoke on Friday at a rally in Mpeketoni, Lamu.

“Kenyans are wiser and they know who cares about moving the country forward. They know who cares about this nation and those running schemes around them,” he said.

Ruto said Kenyans do not want leaders who want to create positions at the top but those who are discussing about growing the economy. “We want to tell them that that journey has come to a dead end.”

The Supreme Court stopped President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner Raila Odinga's bid to make constitutional changes through the BBI.

The court upheld judgment by the lower courts that Uhuru initiated the changes illegally.

Six of the seven members of the court said it was wrong for the President to initiate BBI.

Ruto said leaders who care about ordinary Kenyans are the ones discussing how to fight poverty, improve agricultural yields and create job opportunities.

“They were bragging that nobody can stop reggae. Has it not stopped? Now that the process has collapsed, we must move the county to the next level,” he said.

The DP said money meant for fertiliser, water and other projects was illegally diverted to the BBI process.

ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi said a few people in leadership positions should not play with the minds of Kenyans.

“Public resources should be used prudently so that jobs can be created for people to live better lives,” he said.

Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang'ula said promoters of BBI ought to be embarrassed following the court’s judgment.

“Those who were insulting people as they campaigned for BBI should learn their lessons,” he said.

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa said women should drum up support for Ruto’s candidature.

“I want to assure women that they have a place in Kenya Kwanza Alliance. We must therefore play a role in campaigning for Ruto,” she said.

Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip said majority of regions are backing Ruto’s candidature.

“It will be a shame if Lamu opts to support another candidate. I want to tell Lamu people, Ruto is the sure bet,” he said.
