A bodaboda rider was Monday night killed and his motorcycle stolen by suspected thugs in Dandora, Nairobi.

The body of Peter Wagathairu was found in Kijiji slums near the local dumpsite hours after he had been hired by two men to ferry them to an unknown place.

Police who attended the scene said the deceased had stab wounds in the chest and it seems there was a struggle between him and his killers.

The body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary.

Police believe the gang was after the motorcycle and that the deceased may have resisted the robbery, prompting the fatal stabbing.

No arrest has been made so far but a hunt for the suspected killers is ongoing.

The bodaboda industry is undergoing reforms with the ongoing registration of all operators, which started Monday, March 28.

The primary objective of issuance of Smart Driving Licences to qualified riders is to streamline the sub-sector and to promote road safety and security for the operators and users of their services.

This is likely to see more motorcycles stolen and used elsewhere. Some of the operators are involved in crime.

To register, a rider must present himself/herself in person and have an original ID card, a copy of the KRA PIN number and an active registered phone number.

Elsewhere, police are looking for a gang of ten that raided a gas cylinder shop and stole ten cooking gas cylinders in Nairobi’s Kawangware area.

The gang raided the shop in broad daylight and while armed with machetes.

The attendant raised an alarm leading to the lynching of one of the suspects while four others were arrested.

Police said they recovered two six kilograms cylinders and that the search for the rest is ongoing.

Cases of stealing gas cylinders are rampant in the city with authorities linking them to the high demand for the commodity.
